79 Series V8 Turbo Upgrade

Power Curve Performance recently had a 79 Series V8 in for our Usual Power Curve Performance upgrade, Catch can, Secondary fuel filter, Clutch and ECU tune. While in the process of all of these goodies, it was discovered that the turbo had VNT issues and boost response was not right. The team diagnosed that the turbo VNT mechanism had seized and was not repairable. After a call to the customer and offered our advice he went for an upgraded unit. We chose a genuine new factory Garret unit and had this modified to suit our needs. The results really speak for themselves. Boost at 22psi and performance of the engine really coming alive all with safe parameters of fuel and boost with reliability.

While we tune many of these engines and have a repeatable driving feel for the factory turbo and tune, this package drove extremely well and is another value for money upgrade. With a lot of misinformation about performance upgrades and unrealistic expectations from these products its hard to determine what is the best option for anyone’s vehicle. We have seen this package work for many situations, and given the use of a genuine Garret turbo and Garret components to produce a Genuine Garret upgraded turbo for the 79 series V8 Landcruiser.

With a genuine result of 230hp and 550nm of torque, which is up from an as delivered 130hp and 275nm. Which is a little low but considering the underlining turbo issues. In all, we achieved a 100hp and 275nm increase its very safe to say this is now a very pleasant derivable package suited for all applications.
